CBC Nonfiction Prize

This past week something truly marvelous happened. My story "Trust Exercise" won the 2017 CBC Nonfiction Prize! This prize includes $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and a 10-day writing residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. The other shortlisted stories were all incredibly powerful, and I feel like the luckiest writer alive at the moment.

The jury, composed of David Bidini, Charlotte Gray, and Carmen Aguirre had these lovely words to say about my piece:

"'Trust Exercise' is an elegant reminder not only of the malleability of memory, but also of its interruptions. The writing here breathes like a series of long sighs, and there's a quiet to the prose the way a flame set to parchment is muted yet alive. The devil is in the details, sure, but this wry story of love glides and swoops, too."

"Trust Exercise" can be read on CBC Books.

Debut Novel Coming Spring 2019!

I'm thrilled to announce that my first novel, currently entitled Proof I Was Here, will be published in Spring 2019 by Buckrider Books, the fiction and poetry imprint of Wolsak & Wynn. The name "Buckrider"comes from a Belgian and Dutch legend about bands of robbers who flew around on magical goats robbing locals. While there are no magical goats in my novel, there are indeed a lot of thieves, so I'm very excited to have found such a perfect home for my first book!

Riding the Rails

Taking the UP Express train between Pearson Airport and Union Station this summer? If so, you'll have just enough time to check out my latest story, “Point A to Point X.” Located conveniently in the seat-pocket in front of you, On the UP is a cute little magazine that highlights different areas of interest in Toronto and surrounding parts of Ontario. Each issue also features a piece of short fiction. Past issues have included stories by a bunch of my favourite Ontario writers: Eufemia Fantetti, Ayelet Tsabari, Heather Birrell, Sheila Heti, and Cheri Dimaline, just to name a few! I'm excited to be riding the rails in such good company!
