Taddle Creek - No. 31

The latest issue of Taddle Creek came out this week and it includes a new short story of mine called "Apoptosis". I'm especially excited because it's the first time that my work has been illustrated! If you'd like to see the drawing that accompanies my story - and here's a teaser: there's a mermaid in the picture - you can pick up a copy of the magazine at one of these fine booksellers. Or, if you're in Toronto, perhaps you'd like to swing by the launch on December 10th (8:00PM at The Piston, 937 Bloor St. W.). I'll be doing a short reading that night, and copies of the magazine will be on sale for only 5 bucks. Come find out what "apoptosis" means, and what the heck it has to do with mermaids...

Murder, Lust, and Larceny

Room Magazine's latest theme issue "Murder, Lust, and Larceny" includes a story of mine called "Snatch and Release". I'm thrilled to be hiding out under the same cover as criminally good short story writers Yasuko Thanh and Amy Jones! Yours to Keep

I was recently interviewed by Rebecca Fisseha from Diaspora Dialogues on the progress of my novel "Yours to Keep". The article, which also includes details of my research trips to Barcelona, can be found here.

I'll be reading from the novel at the Diaspora Dialogues tent at Toronto's Word on the Street in September. Come and check it out!

The Next Chapter

The prospect of being interviewed by Shelagh Rogers was a little nerve-wracking, but when I got to the studio, she made me feel comfortable right away. So comfortable in fact, that I ended up discussing pornography with her! You can listen to the interview here.

Unbelievably Good News!

So it's taken me a couple of weeks to really process this information but apparently, I actually won the CBC Short Story contest. It's extremely hard to believe! When I got the phone call, all I could say was, "That's crazy!" I think I said it six or seven times, until the woman from CBC interjected, "Crazy good though, right?" and I said, "Yes!" Anyway, I am still somewhat in shock. I also feel incredibly grateful to have somehow been selected from what I'm sure was an impressive crop of stories from all across the country.

And I don't know which part of the prize I feel most excited about. It's been really gratifying to see my racy little story appear in EnRoute magazine (the hard-copy even has an advisory warning on top which I love). I am so excited to be reading at the Blue Metropolis literary festival later this month, and I am thrilled at having the opportunity to take some time off work using the prize money and to have two weeks at The Leighton Artists' Colony in Banff to write something new. So, generally, I'm just feeling so so lucky and happy about all this...and a little black and blue from all the pinching...
